Literacy Assessment

There are a variety of assessment instruments that can be used to measure literacy development.  All of these measures, however, can be categorized as either formative or summative assessments.  Formative assessment is employed during the learning process through formal as well as informal procedures.  Examples of formative assessment include observations, reading logs, conferences, running records, and assignments.  Summative assessment is employed at the end of a unit of study to measure student learning against a set of standards.  Examples of summative assessment include unit tests, final projects, and a paper.  Both types of assessments should be utilized by the teacher to achieve a balanced view of a learner’s literacy development.
